Metal fans are abuzz this week over the release of the Dethklok “Thunderhorse” Explorer from Gibson USA. Designed in conjunction with Brendon Small, the ridiculously talented musical mind behind Cartoon Network’s Metalocalypse, the guitar is a dream-come-true for shredders. And no one is more excited about the new axe than Small himself, whose ridiculous chops trace back to his Berklee College of Music days, before he became a late-night comic mastermind.

Small sat down at the Gibson Beverly Hills Showroom recently to show off his new guitar and deal some serious metal.

How does a guy go from Berklee guitar whiz to Adult Swim creative mastermind? Well, if you’re Brendon Small, you do it with a king-sized sense of humor, coupled with the mind and fingers of a metal riff monster. Small’s Cartoon Network hit, Metalocalypse, is a late-night must for metal fans and cartoon lovers alike. The show’s fictional band, Dethklok, has proven so popular that Small himself (who shreds for the program soundtrack) has recorded and toured with a live version of Dethklok. Now his metal status is forever enshrined with the release of the Gibson USA Dethklok “Thunderhorse” Explorer. Small sat down at the Beverly Hills Gibson Showroom to talk about his own winding journey to stardom and the monster of a guitar waiting for him at the end of that road.

You’d have to go a long way to find someone who likes the death metal-themed Adult Swim cartoon show Metalocalypse as much as Iskreeeeak-ing do. In fact, you might have to go as far as Seattle, or wherever the the assorted members of the recently reformed Soundgarden call home these days. The grunge icons have proven their love by recruiting Metalocalypse co-creator Brendon Small to oversee the clip for “Black Rain,” a Badmotorfinger-era outtake that features on Soundgarden’s upcoming retrospective CD Telephantasm.

In truth, the video is not as funny asMetalocalypse—or funny at all, really. But it does boast giant monsters, a huge ‘Garden-controlled robot thingummybob, Metalocalypsestars Dethklok, and a nicely epic and phantasmagorical vibe. It also features a hard-to-miss plug for Guitar Hero, the latest version of which—Warriors of Rock—is released September 28 and is initially available for purchase with copies of Telephantasm included.
