Is nothing but b**ls**t their actions condriticate (< i think i've spelled that wrong) their own religion for example the Spanish inquistion went around all of europe killing and torturing innocent people becuase they were accused of witchcraft by a bunch of scared peasants and then when the people where forced to confess to witchcraft they were innocent now does this sound like a religion based on a god who thaught his son to teach his followers to turn the other cheek!

The bible has been re-written 23 times!!!! most of the changes were put in effect to keep people controlled. As a matter of fact most religions are like this. look at muslims!!!! Pray 5 times a day? Tell me that's not control. Telling people how to dress and what to eat? Tell me that's not control. OOH OOH AND THE BIGGEST ONE I ALWAYS LIKE TO HEAR!!! YES!!!!! I was wondering if anyone would get that!!!! On your other point I agree with you. The catholic church is not what it once was where the fundamentalist christian society seems to be getting worse. As a matter of fact it seems the catholic society is more adaptable to the new ideals of this generation, but why change to teh expectations of the masses? I would have to say to attract more catholics. Remember that if the church recruits even one person (christian or catholic) they get too things over them:

1) Power of the person's choices

2) MONEY!!!!!

So I guess I'm wondering where the advancement of the soul really comes into play here??? Like I said previously, I study the worlds religions for fun and have found that when you take all the B.S. out of each one there are always the same fundamental core values. Love, respect, yadda yadda yadda. The only things that change are what the church expects from you while using gods name to carry out their own agenda's. And why do we have to go to a church??? the house of god is an illusion since as long as we are alive we are in the house of god at all times. Even non christ related religions have the same things. Mormon's, muslims, hindu, etc. etc. My take on the whole bag is take any religion with a grain of salt. Get what you need to learn from it and get out!!!

They make more money that way. I do not believe that any religion, outside of cults and bullshit like scientology, exists solely for the sake of power and wealth and assorted other benefits, but I believe that most of them sincerely believe what they preach, which is what makes things so problematic; I can't blame a man for his belief in a specific god anymore than I can blame a man for being racist or a man for believing in aliens or a man for being afraid of something or a man thinking he's special compared to those around him. The churches gain wealth because they request (but do not require) money from their followers to help expand the church and do churchly things. They gain power because when you have followers who believe you know the truth regarding shit as convoluted as life, death, and the concepts inherent both within and beyond, you basically have an army; perhaps not an army of physical force, but an army of mental and/or vocal force, and always at least an army of economic force. Power and money seem to be more secondary benefits reaped by a church due to the state of existing as a church more than the propelling force for existing as a church.

The church doesn't really hold power over a person's opinions that stiffly. They definitely hold influence, but it's nowhere near what you'd call "control." Remember that even Popes have been deposed (Pope Benedict VI, Pope Benedict IX) and sometimes even killed (Pope John XII) by their followers in the past. Sometimes, like Stephen VI, popes are imprisoned and THEN killed for being ****wads. And even when they don't do anything bad enough to piss people off around them, there's still differing opinions amongst the followers of a given religion with their leaders and each other (on subjects ranging everywhere from birth control to the death penalty to politics). As far as Abrahamic religions are concerned, the only things any two people of a religion will necessarily agree on is the name of the guy who they think made us and the name of the guy who they think that guy sent down as a prophet (Christians: God, Jesus. Jews: Yahweh, Moses. Muslims: Allah, Muhammad). Really, I think a main motivation for religions changing over time is due to the very fact that it is a different time. As was taken into account with the writing of the constitution and declaration of independence of the US, a structure that is built immobile and resistant to change will always collapse eventually. Churches are no exception. Take, for example, the bible's treatment of money and wealth. The bible emphasizes a very socialist/communist view of wealth, and teaches people that they should not amass wealth and that they should put the community's financial needs before their personal financial wants. That is never really emphasized these days other than when it's time to pass around the collection plate, and it's primarily because we live in capitalistic times, where the social mindset is to think of oneself first, foremost, and essentially always.

I don't hate religion personally, I just hate people who let their religion **** up the life they're living now or who **** up other people's lives for the sake of their religion.

There is a practical reason for that. It strengthens the structure of the community of those followers in the area, and it also serves as a kind of update center. It's also worth mentioning that, since one of the main differences between sects within the same religion is how a particular sect interprets their particular sacred text(s), going to church helps make sure the followers are on the same page, so to speak, so that they do not get confused; It's basically like the news section of this forum, except instead of "What's new with Metalocalypse/Dethklok?" the question being answered is "What's new with the church?" It's impractical to use the internet as a guidance source for a specific sect of religion, so imagine if there was no way to get Dethklok info on the internet. Where would you get it from? It's not in the newspapers. It would appear sparsely in magazines. But, since you can't find out which magazines it's in on the internet, how would you know which magazines to get? You'd find a group of people like-minded in that regard, and pool your collective efforts and resources together to amass the info you want. You just created what is, essentially, a church, in the effort to create something that serves one of the same purposes that a church is meant to serve.

Wow!!! A fellow Buddhist!!! I'm 3rd generation Tibetan Buddhist. It kind of has a lot to do with my opinions on the church. I was always taught to never push our religion on anyone, unless they asked about it (then tell them what they want to know and they can make their own chioce NON PRESSURE!!!)and NOT to chastise other religions. Once I got in to school and all the Christian kids told me that I was going to hell if I didn't change to the "right" religion or that all Buddhists sacrifice animals and other bullshit like that. I even had a preacher tell me that he could save my soul if I wanted because "I was too good of a kid to be Buddhist". I know I'm not supposed to be sour towards other religions, but after dealing with this my whole life I have a certain contempt built up. I don't claim any religion as my own any more as I take the ideologies that I find true in all religions and use that as my base of belief that I need (although Buddhism accounts for 75% of my beliefs). That's why I hold no faith in fascist christian dogma or neo-catholic B.S. as they have no respect for other religions or beliefs. They don't even have respect for their mutually founded religions. they would rather fight over recognizing the pope as head of church or crossing themselves left-to-right or right-to-left. I guess there are always a few radicals no matter what religion you belong to but god dammit leave me the hell alone!!!
