Well my buddy Chupacabra irrevocably thinks I'm the craziest bassist in west Ft Worth. Also, thanks to my friend Jeremy who does the most amazing Murderface impersonation, I now know that it takes me at least three times as long as it should to do basic geometry with Murderface lisping dirty limericks in my ear. But I actually was wonder ing about this so I went to my local Guitar Center and did some measuring. Here are the results of my research:

Subject: Gibson Thunderbird Studio V (2004)

Body depth: 1 inch
Depth from back of body to top of strings: 1.5 inches
Distance between strings: .5 inch
Distance between top of body @ lowest point and top of E string: 2.75 inches
Distance between top of body @ lowest point and bottom of G string: 5.5 inches

Check with Toki's cod piece verifies that a bass string can be intonated by hooking the lip of the glans.

Assumption 1: Bass set tight against base

(5.5^2) * (1.5^2) = 68.0625

Required distance from base to intonator = sqrt 68.0625 or 8.25 inches.
(add .75 for distance from intonator to tip) = 9 inches

Assumption 2: Bass set 2 inches below base to allow "swing room"

(7.5^2) * (1.5^2) = 126.5625
Required distance from base to intonator = sqrt 126.5625 or 11.25 inches.
(add .75 for distance from intonator to tip) = 12 inches.

No wonder he wears shorts and got better at playing after he learned to freeball.
